Mission Statement

To serve the citizens of USD 263 by providing quality, affordable recreation programs that invite participation, build relationships, and enhance lives.

The Mulvane Recreation Commission supports its mission by:

Include all citizens of USD 263 in leisure programming, eliminating any discrimination on the basis of race, sex, religion, ability or economical status. Through commission supervision, ensure that programs are conducted in a safe manner and facilities are maintained.

Enhancing Lives:
Organize opportunities for citizens to strengthen existing relationships while creating new relationships through the implementation of programs for individuals, groups and families thus promoting a stronger community bond. About Our Director

Ticia Human, Mulvane Recreation Center Director

I grew up in Mulvane, the daughter of Mulvane’s Recreation Director at the time. I was always involved in every aspect of recreation so when I went to college it seemed natural to pursue a Recreation Degree. I graduated from Pittsburg State University with a degree in Recreation. I have worked with seniors in rehab and long term care settings as a CTRS, providing recreational therapy. Most recently I served as the Director of Maria Court, Mulvane’s assisted living center.

Having volunteered for the Recreation Commissions wherever I lived, I never could put community recreation behind me and when the opportunity at Mulvane presented itself, I knew I had to follow my heart.

I am married to Bud Human and we have three daughters. Olivia, our oldest, is our drama mama and dancing queen; Gabrielle is the girl version of ‘Bob the Builder’ and the ‘Crocodile Hunter’ combined; while Sophia, our youngest, could best be described as a ‘Human’ wrecking ball. All in all, life is good at our house, although my husband may say there is a severe deficiency of testosterone.

My goal as well as the goal of the MRC Board is to provide an affordable, diverse selection of recreation programming for all ages and all abilities.

Our History

The Mulvane Recreation Commission was conceived in 1957 when a group of local citizens brought a petition before the school board. This petition asked the Board of Education to support this community project by raising funds through a 1 mil property taxation. At that time, a mil equaled approximately $5,000.00.

The BOE approved the plan and in January of 1958, MRC was formed with 5 local appointed citizens (2 representing the City, 2 representing the District, and 1 selected at-large by the other 4). The first session of Summer Recreation took place in June of that year. Programs first offered in 1958 included archery, rifle range, folk dance, arts/crafts, baseball and summer band. The Commission oversaw all of the programming and policies.

We have had 5 directors over our 5 decades. Willard Meek, Bill Fairchild, and Marc Anderson served as part time directors and ran the MRC programs from home offices. In 2006 we hired our first full time director, Clayton Bishop, and opened our first office space in downtown Mulvane. Our current full time director, Ticia Human, was hired in June 2007.

In February of 2007 we moved into our first Recreation Center housed in the new USD 263 Admin Center (the former Mulvane Intermediate School) located on East Mulvane Street. With this move we have greatly expanded our programs to include more diversity and a wider age range. We are always looking for ideas and suggestions from our patrons, and instructors to teach classes.

We would welcome any articles from the past which represent what MRC has done. Pictures, memorabilia, news articles and recollections of programs or teachers would be most appreciated. We plan to make a display of our history in the front lobby - with your help, it will be a terrific exhibit.
