Father Son Campout: June 19-20, 2009

Our first Father-Son Campout was held at the Mulvane Sports Complex, at the fishing pond on June 19-20, 2009. We started setting up camp around 6:00 p.m. Friday evening. We had 7 adults (dads, uncle and grandfather) and 13 boys aged Pre-K thru 8th grade with a handful of MRC volunteers.

The campers set up their tents and then fished in the pond until they got hungry. Fred Heershe built and attended to our bonfire, complete with Mulvane Fire Department tanker truck to make sure everything was safe. Then everyone roasted hot dogs over the fire. We ate hot dogs with buns and condiments, assorted chips, pop or water to drink, and later, roasted marshmallows for S'mores. After supper, there was a flashlight scavenger hunt with prizes the boys could keep and ghost stories for each tent.

We were supposed to stay until 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning, but were forced to break camp early when rumbles in the distance woke up the camp at daybreak. Most everyone was able to get their tents down before the rain started and then met at the Concession Stand for breakfast of doughnuts and juice.

A good time was had by all! Thank you to our volunteers and participants for making this first campout a success. And thank you to the City of Mulvane for letting us use their wonderful Sports Complex, overnight.
